Treasurer Goldberg Hosts Panel on Black Women's Equal Pay Day
BOSTON -- Today, the State Treasurer's Office hosted a virtual panel with Black women leaders from across Massachusetts to discuss Black Women's Equal Pay Day and the wage gap. This day, August 13th, marks how far into 2020 on average, Black women must work to earn what White men earned in 2019 alone. Treasurer Deborah Goldberg's Office of Economic Empowerment also highlighted their recently revamped website, EqualPayMA.com, and how it addresses the wage gaps that Black women face. "I was honored to host the Equal Pay Day panel with Black Women leaders, who have been fighting to address this issue for too long," said State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg. "The organizations and policies highlighted today, along with the tools provided by our website EqualPayMA.com, are all important resources in eliminating the wage gap for Black women and all women across Massachusetts." The event was bookended by a walk-through of the newly updated EqualPayMA.com website and how the free tools and resources can empower employers and employees to work towards closing the wage gap for Black women. Narrowing the gender wage gap has been a mission for the Treasurer and the Office of Economic Empowerment since its inception, and today's conversation marks another step in working towards that goal.
On her first day in office, Treasurer Goldberg created the Office of Economic Empowerment, led by a deputy treasurer, with the deliberate goal of implementing a range of economic empowerment initiatives that include closing the gender wage gap, increasing access to financial education, improving college affordability, and investing in STEM careers and education.
