Nine Winners honored At State House Ceremony

BOSTON — State Treasurer Deb Goldberg, Chair of the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) and Jack McCarthy, MSBA Executive Director, today announced the nine winners of the 9th Annual “My Ideal School” Contest. The contest was open to all 1st grade students throughout the Commonwealth and was designed to promote a discussion between students and teachers about how to build the best schools.

Students were asked to create images of what their ideal school would look like and to describe three things they love about their school. Nine regional winners were chosen from across the Commonwealth to receive a special prize generously donated by Santander Bank, N.A. Regional winners were honored today at a special ceremony at the Massachusetts State House. The drawing submitted by one lucky grand prize winner will also appear on the cover of the 2015 MSBA Annual Report.

“As we celebrate the creativity and imagination of our students today, we renew our commitment to ensuring that all children in Massachusetts have access to the state of the art schools they need to thrive,” said Treasurer Deb Goldberg. “The Massachusetts School Building Authority will continue to be a strong partner in helping our communities achieve their educational goals.”

“We received over 1,200 entries from first grade students across the Commonwealth, which is very impressive,” stated Executive Director McCarthy. “Treasurer Goldberg and I encourage each of the winners and every student who participated to continue to let us know how we can help build effective and sustainable schools for present and future generations of students.”

“We want to congratulate all of the winners for their creativity and thoughtful descriptions of what they love about their schools,” said Patricia C. Packard, SVP and Director of Government Banking at Santander. “This contest is a fun way to engage young students in the power of learning and how the environment in which they do so can inspire them to succeed in the classroom.”

The MSBA partners with Massachusetts communities to support the design and construction of educationally-appropriate, flexible, sustainable and cost-effective public school facilities. Since its 2004 inception, the Authority has made over 1,500 site visits to more than 250 school districts as part of its due diligence process and has made over $11.3 billion in reimbursements for education capital improvement projects.
